Video Analysis of Soccer Players’ Injuries during the 2010 World Cup Games

The aim of this study was the video analysis of soccer players' injuries in the 2010 World Cup games. Therefore, all World Cup games were reviewed through video analysis and their information (the number of injuries, the mechanism of injuries, the time of incidence, the type of accident leading to injuries and the injury occurrence area in the pitch) were recorded in the injury report form. In the present study that was descriptive-analytical, Chi square test (X<sup>2</sup>) was used for statistical analysis. Results showed that 92 injuries occurred during 64 games or 39.3 injuries per 1000 hours of game. Most incidence of injuries occurred in the final 15 minutes of the second half (minutes of 76-90) (<em>P</em><0.05). Air challenging (28.3%) and receiving tackles (21.7%) were the most common mechanisms causing injuries (<em>P</em>˃0.05). The area 5 with 20.7% and then areas 2 and 8 with equal ratio of 18.5% had the most percentage of injuries (<em>P</em><0.05). Also, 84.8% of injuries happened by hits (<em>P</em><0.05). The incidence of injuries in these games was lower than previous world cups; this can be due to the stricter coaching rules to maintain the health of players in recent years, a difference in the definition of injury, the different game system, differences in duration and type of fitness training and bodybuilding and different methods of data collection.

<br />The aim of this study was to examine the effect of aquagymnastic training on position sense of the knee in older women suffering from osteoarthritis. 26 women aged between 50 and 65 suffering from knee OA were selected from Kerman city and were randomly assigned to two groups: aquatic training and control. The position sense was measured in their knee joint flexion 60º angle by skin marking and digital photography before and after 8 weeks of training. Analysis of variance with repeated measures was used at significance level (<em>P</em><0.05). Despite a notable decrease in the mean absolute error of knee joint 60º angle in the experimental group, no significant changes were observed compared to pre-aquagymnastic training and also in intergroup results (<em>P</em>=0.134, <em>P</em>≥0.05). According to the above results, although the changes stemming from aquagymnastic training on the position sense of knee joint were not significant in the older women with osteoarthritis, as improvements were observed, it is recommended to evaluate aquagymnastic training with higher intensity for a longer period of time.

<br />Mentally retarded children have lower levels of physical fitness in comparison with normal children of the same age. As balance exercises can be a key to solve this problem, this study aimed at investigating the effect of balance exercises on static and dynamic balance of mentally retarded students. In this semi-experimental study, 32 mentally retarded female students in Yazd city were assigned to two groups: experimental and control. SEBT test, Stroke test and Sharp and Romberg test were used to measure the balance. Before and after 8 weeks of balance exercises for the experimental group, balance test was conducted for both groups. An independent t test was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that after the balance exercises, the dynamic and static balance on one foot improved significantly in experimental group (<em>P</em>≤0.05) in comparison with the control group in posttest in comparison with the pretest. But, static balance on both feet had no significant improvement in any of the two groups (<em>P</em>≥0.05). It can be concluded that 8 weeks of balance exercises influenced the improvement of the dynamic and static balance of the mentally retarded students; therefore, such exercises are recommended as a part of physical education course of the mentally retarded people.

<br />The landing technique is one of the basic and most important parts of many sport events known as one of the main causes of lower extremity injuries. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different landing techniques on electromyography (EMG) activity of selected lower extremity muscles before and after fatigue in female athletes. 15 female athletes (physical education students) participated in this study. Three types of insole with 5° medial and lateral slopes and without a slope (normal) were used. All participants performed landing techniques with three types of insole before and after the fatigue protocol. The electrical activity of the peroneus longus (PL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscles were assessed by EMG. The data analysis indicated a significant decrease in the activity of PL and MG muscles following fatigue during landing (<em>P</em>≤0.05). Although there was a significant difference in the activity of MG muscle during different landing positions (<em>P</em>=0.01), there were no significant differences in the activity of PL muscle during different landing positions (<em>P</em>>0.05). The present findings showed that an empowerment of gastrocnemius muscle in eccentric contractions and an empowerment of PL muscle to maintain its activity during fatigue can be beneficial to prevent injuries stemming from improper landings in female athletes and to achieve their efficient performance.

<br />The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of FIFA11+ injury prevention program on the timing and electrical activity of knee related muscles in young male soccer players. EMG data during single-limb drop landing of 24 young male soccer players (12 control and 12 experimental) were collected in pretest and posttest. After 8 weeks of training in experimental group, analysis of variance with repeated measures, independent sample t test and paired sample t test were used for statistical analysis. The results showed that vastus medialis (VM), medial hamstring (MH) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) activities increased while the vastus lateralis (VL), lateral hamstring (LH), rectus femuris (RF) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) activities decreased after the training. FIFA11+ training decreased the timing of RF, VL, LH and LG whereas it increased the timing of VM, MH and MG. The study found out that FIFA11+ program can improve the neuromuscular characteristics of lower extremities in young soccer players, can potentially reduce the risk of ACL injury during landing and lead to ACL optimal control.

<br /> <br />Parkinson's disease (PD) is an acute brain disorder that affects body movements. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of combined balance and core stabilization progressive training on balance in older patients with Parkinson's disease. In this quasi-experimental study with cross-sectional design, 16 male patients with Parkinson's disease in Sari city were voluntarily selected with convenience sampling method. Then they were divided into two groups using random assignment method and the principle of balancing. The training program included two four-weeks of balance and core stabilization progressive training (3 sessions a week, an average of 30 minutes). In the second four-week, the types of training changed by cross-sectional method. Open and close eyes adjustment was measured as the dependent variable. Statistical analysis of the data at the end of the program revealed a significant change in both open and close eyes balance test scores (<em>P</em>=0.001). Moreover, the difference in open eye balance scores between the two groups was significant (<em>P</em>=0.023). Based on these results, combined balance and core stabilization training is suitable to improve balance in patients with Parkinson's disease and a program in which core stabilization training is performed first is more effective.

<br />Nowadays musculoskeletal disorders are the most prevalent harmful factors in work environments. Non-ergonomic work stations and unsuitable designs of work environments confront workers with musculoskeletal disorders creating risk factors. It seems that the prevalence of these disorders in carpet weavers is more than other jobs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of strength training on neck-shoulder pain of female carpet weavers. This study was semi-experimental with a pretest and posttest design. The population consisted of 30-40-year-old female carpet weavers. 20 subjects whose intensity of pain on numerical rating scale was equal or more than 3 were randomly assigned to two control and experimental groups. After 8 weeks of strength training, the intensity of present‚ usual and worst pain was measured again by a 10-point scale. The comparison of pretest and posttest in the experimental group showed a significant difference in the intensity of present‚ usual and worst pain. This reduction was reported as %53‚ %50 and %58 for worst‚ usual and present pain respectively. But in control group, no significant differences were observed between pretest and posttest. According to these findings, special strength training reduced worst, usual and present pain.

<br />Although the risk of injury in soccer players is high, few studies have been conducted in the field of prevention of these injuries. FIFA 11+ warm-up program is a sport injury prevention program that has recently been extended by FIFA. FIFA 11+ includes 10 exercises for warm-up. Recently, many studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of this program for injury prevention. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effect of the FIFA 11+ program on injury incidence in soccer players and their performance. The scientific databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and Magiran were searched using the keywords "FIFA 11+", "football", "soccer", "injury prevention" and "The 11". Persian papers and those articles that could not be found on the internet were searched manually. Titles and abstracts were examined by the researchers. A total of 951 studies were identified and 17 studies met our inclusion criteria. The results showed that the teams implemented the FIFA 11+ reduced the number of their injuries by 30% to 70%. In addition, those players with high compliance with the FIFA 11+ reduced all injuries by 35% and those who participated in FIFA 11+ program at least 1.5 sessions per week observed drastic improvements in their motor performance and neuromuscular factors. Due to the large number of amateur soccer players and detrimental effect of sports injuries on the economic and social levels, the FIFA 11+ program can be considered as a fundamental tool to minimize the risks of participation in football.
